My name is Kym Sanders and I have been appointed to the role of student Support Officer at Coffs Harbour Learning Centre. The Student Support Officer role is a new position in NSW high schools to support student wellbeing. My career has been in social welfare and I have spent many years working with families and young people at risk. You will be able to find me at CHLC Monday to Friday.
The primary objective of my role is to support student wellbeing and to ensure they feel safe, valued, supported and connected to the school and within their greater community.
Part of my role is to engage with parents/carers and external support services. This could range from providing information about services or supporting families by making referrals or connecting them to services when needed. Also, I will be providing support to improve student attendance. I may also see students individually to offer support throughout the day, at group activities, within their classrooms, at school or community events.
I will also be responsible for supporting student’s in the process of transitioning out of CHLC and to help facilitate their placement in post school options; return to mainstream education, traineeships, employment, TAFE or the like. This will also include supporting them to achieve their work experience goals.
