About our school
Coffs Harbour Learning Centre (CHLC) is a Department of Education and Community special school, School for Specific Purpose (SSP) established in 2007 to provide intensive behaviour and educational support for students with complex and challenging behaviours.
CHLC provides an inclusive learning environment and responsive programs to ensure engagement and ongoing improvement in academic and behaviour outcomes. Our philosophy is based on building positive relationships in a nurturing and safe learning environment, which will allow students to experience success.
Each student has an individual education program tailored to their needs. Students are taught strategies to use and positive ways to manage their behaviour to allow them a smooth transition back to mainstream school, progression to TAFE or into the workforce.
School structure
CHLC operates four classes, each supporting a maximum of seven students. Classes are arranged according to students’ needs and dispositions and can be adjusted throughout the year. Each class teacher is supported by a School Learning and Support Officer (SLSO).
We work with families, carers and support staff to make a learning and wellbeing plan for each student. This means all students can learn in a way that suits them best.
Alongside our curriculum, students take part in programs that build skills in:
- communication
- independence
- life skills
- social skills.
Our classrooms are designed to meet each student’s needs. We support students to feel safe, respected and ready to learn in a way that suits them. Our staff are caring and are skilled to help students feel confident, connected and proud of who they are.
Our school uses a placement process. Enrolment occurs through a formal referral. Families and schools can contact us if they think our school might be right for their child. To learn more, visit our enrolment process page.
